San Diego State University

The Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) at San Diego State University serves nearly 300 graduate students and 200 undergraduate majors. Some of the unique offerings of the GSPH include an MPH in global emergency preparedness and response and a PhD in global health. The faculty of the GSPH has extensive overseas projects and research, and global health is integrated into all MPH degree programs as central to public health education.

The GSPH has extensive reach into the San Diego community. The Institute for Public Health is practice-oriented and handles about $3 million annually in grants and contracts that are transitional in nature, taking science and evidence-based public health and turning these findings into best practices in the community. Our 30 tenured/tenure-track faculty members are principal investigators on grants and contracts totaling over $20 million per year, making them some of the most productive faculty in public health research.

The city of San Diego and its surrounding environments of oceans, deserts, and mountains make it a wonderful place to live, work, and study. At the same time, San Diego is uniquely situated to experience many public health problems. These include border issues related to health and violence, large Latino and refugee populations exhibiting many health disparities, and fragile environments such as the sea and deserts. As a result, our students have many opportunities to immerse themselves in communities that are struggling to improve their health status.
