University of Tennessee, Knoxville

2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the MPH degree at the University of Tennessee. Nearly 1,200 students have earned the MPH degree, which has garnered continual accreditation over the four decades.

Prior to accreditation reviews by the Council on Education for Public Health, the American Public Health Association and its Committee on Professional Education recognized the UT program in 1969 as the first to merit national accreditation outside a school of public health.

In addition to the initial MPH concentrations in community health education and health planning/administration, the program offers a veterinary public health concentration in partnership with the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, dual MS-MPH degrees in public health nutrition in partnership with the UT Department of Nutrition and a minor in epidemiology engaging faculty collaboration across the campus.

Emphasizing the importance of linking with professional practice, the MPH program facilitates nine-week internships, incorporates additional community experiences in coursework and is finalizing establishment of an academic health department with the Knox County Health Department. The interdisciplinary UT Center for Public Health, sponsored by five colleges on the Knoxville campus, enables additional opportunities for research and scholarly pursuits by faculty and students.
